For two weeks, Vietnam opened its heart to me, and I found myself at home in this beautiful green country. From my first moments to my final goodbyes, I encountered kindness and hospitality that went beyond anything I could have expected. The Vietnamese people, with their gentle and respectful nature, showed me what hope looks like in daily life.
The Oblate Community’s Embrace
Fr. Antoine DINH Xuan Hùng, Superior of the Vietnam Delegation, along with Fr. Anthony NGUYEN Van Nghiêu and Fr. Roland JACQUES, accompained me through this memorable visit. The scholasticate community, under Fr. Philippe HUYNH Xuân Hưởng’s leadership, welcomed me warmly. In every Oblate house I visited, I found brothers ready to share their life and work.
Living Our Founder’s Vision
Here in Vietnam, I saw our Founder’s vision living and breathing. Just as St. Eugene de Mazenod did in Aix in 1812, these Oblates pour themselves into educating young people and bringing the Good News to the poor. They work in remote areas, reaching out to those most in need, especially children. Their joy flows from a simple life centered on prayer and the Eucharist. Living together in community gives them strength – no Oblate walks alone.
A Shared Mission with the Laity
Perhaps most inspiring was witnessing the close collaboration between Oblates and lay people throughout Vietnam. Dedicated helpers support every ministry, offering their hands and hearts to advance the mission. Together, they work as pilgrims of hope for Vietnam’s young generation. The children’s cheerful faces and innocent smiles filled my heart with joy, while the tireless dedication of Oblates and their lay partners showed me the true spirit of mission work.
As I look back, gratitude fills my heart for every person I met Oblates, laypeople, and especially the children of Vietnam. This country, with its hardworking people and their immense spirit of hope, has left a lasting mark on my memory. Their kindness and joy continue to inspire me.
