Forty years ago, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate embarked on a remarkable journey in Zambia, establishing their presence in Lukulu Sancta Maria Mission. Today, this very mission has given birth to a new chapter in the OMI’s legacy – the first group of Missionary Associates of Mary Immaculate (MAMI).
Commissioning of MAMI Group
The historic commissioning ceremony of the MAMI group was held at Lukulu Sancta Maria Mission, graced by the Superior of the Zambia Delegation, Father Chishimba CHIBESA. In his homily, Fr. Chishimba reflected on Jesus’ words, “Whoever wants to be first must be the last of all and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35). He emphasized, “In doing God’s work, there is no competition. We are called to serve, not to seek greatness.” He reminded the MAMI group that their mission is to grow the Kingdom of God by serving the most abandoned and the poor.
The birthplace of Oblate formation in Zambia
Significantly, Lukulu Sancta Maria Mission is also the birthplace of Oblate formation in Zambia. It was here that the idea of establishing a formation program took root. Among the first to embark on this journey was Brother Maximillian MWAKACHEYA, now the current Superior of the community in Lukulu and Chaplain for the MAMI group.
Representatives from the MAMI Mongu Chapter joined in witnessing this milestone, traveling approximately 300 kilometers from Mongu to Lukulu via the scenic route through Limulunga into the Zambezi plains. This journey echoed the path of the first missionaries, who braved similar terrain to bring the Gospel to the people. Their presence symbolized the unity and solidarity among MAMI members across Zambia, as they celebrated this significant step forward in the OMI’s mission.
Honoring Oblate legacy and embracing the future
Fr. Chishimba highlighted the importance of this milestone: “The MAMI group represents a new frontier in our mission to spread the Gospel and serve the most vulnerable. We celebrate this achievement, honoring our legacy and embracing the future.” The MAMI group’s commissioning marks a significant expansion of the OMI’s mission and vision in Zambia. As they begin their journey, they build upon the foundations laid by the Oblates, continuing the legacy of compassion, justice, and faith.
Congratulations to the inaugural MAMI group!
