From July 4 to 26, 2024, scholastics from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, from three formation houses (IRS, OBRA, and San Antonio), gathered in Aix-en-Provence for a life-changing experience. Over three weeks, they rediscovered their vocation in a setting rich with Oblate history and spirituality.

Aix-en-Provence, “the Oblate Holy Land”

Known as “the Oblate Holy Land,” Aix-en-Provence, with its cobblestone streets and rich history, was the perfect setting for the Scholastics to explore the life of St. Eugene de Mazenod. From visiting his birthplace to the old prison where he ministered, each site deeply connected them to the founder. By retracing St. Eugene’s steps from his early years to his return from exile, the Scholastics experienced the founder’s passion that continues to fuel the Oblate mission today.

A deeper unity and empathy within the community

Each day was enriched with sincere dialogues and communal reflections. They discussed the importance of prayer, community life, and the vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity that define their vocation. Engaging with the Constitutions and Rules helped them connect with the core of their mission, reinforcing that love that characterizes every Oblate. Personal stories of faith and vocation, shared from their diverse backgrounds, fostered a deeper unity and empathy within the community.

The mystery of the cross and Oblation

At the core of this experience was daily prayer and reflection. Each day, they explored the profound mystery of the cross and Oblation, discovering new clarity and purpose. This spiritual routine energized them and strengthened their commitment. They also visited iconic places like Saint Laurent de Verdun, Barjols, St. Maximin, and Marseille.

Devotion to service and evangelization

On July 21st, they animated the 9 AM Mass at the Mission Church and spent the afternoon in missionary activities, inviting the local community to join in prayer and praise. These experiences demonstrated their devotion to service and evangelization, leaving a meaningful impact on the community of Aix. By the end of this unique experience, the Scholastics felt deeply proud of their Oblate vocation. Their connection with Aix, St. Eugene, and that first community sparked a desire to fully commit to God and the Church.

A renewed Oblate spirit

Leaving Aix-en-Provence, they carried with them a renewed Oblate spirit. Inspired by the examples they studied and the experiences they shared, they are ready to seek holiness in their daily lives and ministries. This gathering was a source of inspiration and renewal, igniting the flame of their Oblate vocation and preparing them to carry forward the Oblate cross and Oblation.
