A Prayerful Eucharistic Gathering at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows

Belleville, IL

By Fr. Salvador Gonzalez, OMI, Director, National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows

Outdoor tents provided welcome respite from the July heat

On July 7-8, the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows was blessed to welcome Bishop Michael McGovern of Belleville along with Pilgrims from California and over 1,000 local pilgrims. The pilgrims, journeying from California to Indianapolis for the National Eucharistic Congress, found a place of solace and devotion at our Shrine.

The day commenced with a special 2:00 PM Spanish Mass, presided over by two Auxiliary Bishops from Chicago. Bishop Mark Bartosic delivered an inspiring talk on the Eucharist, which deeply enriched the spiritual experience of all attendees, leaving them inspired and uplifted.

Hundreds processed around the Shrine led by Bishop McGovern

Bishop McGovern led a solemn procession, carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the Shrine grounds. Along the way, local parish choirs filled the air with songs of praise. The procession culminated at the Shrine Amphitheatre, where pilgrims engaged in Adoration, witness talks, praise, worship, and confessions.

Throughout the night, the Christ the King Chapel hosted continuous Eucharistic Adoration, allowing pilgrims to spend intimate moments with the Blessed Sacrament in prayer and reflection. The Sacrament of Reconciliation was offered all night.

The pilgrims were hosted by Oblate Fathers: (L-R) Salvador Gonzalez, George Knab, and Victor Patricio-Silva

The Eucharistic Pilgrimage was a significant event for all Catholics of the Belleville Diocese. The Oblates were happy and proud to offer hospitality to all visitors. This event was an excellent way to end my time as Director of the National Shrine. During the procession, I thanked God for the many Oblates who came before me and worked hard to build up the Shrine to what it is today. I also prayed for the Oblates who remain and who will come after me to continue the mission of being a place of hospitality, healing, and hope. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Gonzalez will be succeeded By Fr. Michael Powell, OMI as new director)
